If you buy “plastic lumber” knowing that you are purchasing a product made primarily of plastic, non-renewable and non-biodegradable, you are entirely within your rights. The problem arises when it is sold as an ecological solution, as if it were better for the planet or as if using responsible wood were synonymous with destroying forests.
Real wood, when it comes from responsibly managed forest plantations, is a renewable resource: it is planted, harvested, and replanted. In addition, at the end of its useful life, it can be reused, transformed, or naturally degraded.
Plastic, on the other hand, remains plastic. It can last for years, even decades, eventually becoming waste. That is why selling “plastic lumber” as a perfect environmental alternative is not information: it is misleading marketing.
Although its name suggests that it is a type of wood, it is not. It is simply plastic made to look like wood, which can mislead consumers seeking a natural and sustainable material. Many companies sell it as “synthetic wood” or “eco-friendly wood,” but in reality it has none of the natural properties of real wood.
Buy plastic lumber knowing exactly what you are purchasing, but do not let yourself be misled by false environmental promises.
