ISPM 15 ICA

ISPM 15 (International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures No. 15)

ISPM 15 - NIMF 15

ISPM 15 is an international regulation adopted by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) to reduce the risk of introducing and spreading pests and diseases through wood packaging used in international trade.

Control in Colombia

In Colombia, the entity responsible for monitoring and enforcing this standard is the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA).

Compliance by Madepal

Madepal complies with the ISPM 15 Phytosanitary Standard (CO-76005-HT-DB) established by the FAO, in effect since 2004, ensuring the phytosanitary heat treatment of pallets and wooden packaging for export.

Key Aspects of ISPM 15

  • Application: Applies to wood packaging materials thicker than 6 mm, such as pallets, crates, boxes, and wooden reels.
  • Approved Treatments:
    • Heat Treatment (HT): The wood must be heated to a minimum core temperature of 56°C for at least 30 minutes.
    • Methyl Bromide Fumigation (MB): Although less commonly used due to its environmental impact, it is still accepted in some countries.
  • Official Marking: Treated packaging must bear the ISPM 15 stamp, which includes an international symbol, country code, producer code, and treatment type (HT or MB).
  • Exceptions: The standard does not apply to processed materials such as fiberboard, plywood, or particleboard, nor to wooden packaging manufactured using adhesives, heat, or pressure.

Importance of ISPM 15

  • Prevents the spread of pests between countries.
  • Facilitates international trade, as many countries prohibit the entry of untreated wooden packaging.
  • Protects biodiversity and ecosystems by preventing the introduction of forest insects and diseases.

If you export or import products with wooden packaging, it is essential to ensure they comply with ISPM 15 to avoid penalties, customs delays, or even the destruction of goods.
